Louisiana is full of festivals, music and good food, but it’s also the loneliest state in America, according to a new report. A recently published report by USA Today says Louisiana is the loneliest state in the country, with 20% of people in the state saying they are “always” or “usually” alone. Dr. Andrea Espinoza of OCSM Health says loneliness can lead to many health problems such as mental illness and other health complications. “The scary thing is that loneliness and the health implications in terms of morbidity and mortality are equivalent to smoking 15 cigarettes a day for health. That is, an increased risk of dementia, cardiovascular disease, stroke and premature death” Espinoza said. She recommends joining support groups, volunteering, attending music concerts, and doing something creative. She says a simple way to combat loneliness is to go outside and get some sun.
