National Weather Service (NWS) meteorologists have issued several cold weather advisories for Nevada as temperatures threaten to drop below freezing Monday night.
The frigid temperatures are associated with a cold front that is bringing late mountain snow to the northwest this week. Cold temperatures arrived Sunday and the NWS office in Elko, Nevada, expects a warming trend to begin Tuesday. The cold front comes as the Midwest and Northeast face the first heat wave of the season, raising temperatures to dangerous levels.
A hard freeze warning and frost warning, as well as several other cold weather advisories, are in effect for the northern half of Nevada. The warnings are in effect overnight Monday and are expected to expire at 8 a.m. local time Tuesday morning.
“For the hard freeze warning, subzero temperatures as low as 27 degrees are expected. For the frost warning, temperatures as low as 35 will cause frost to form,” the NWS warned. “Frost and freezing conditions will kill crops and other sensitive vegetation and possibly damage unprotected outdoor pipes. Cover or bring in sensitive plants.”
NWS meteorologist Clair Ketchum told Newsweek that the system’s biggest threat would be to gardeners and farmers who have sensitive crops planted outside.
“We have people who are into outdoor gardening; I know there are some people who plant vegetables and fruits that are susceptible to cold weather, so they could lose their crops and the hard work they’ve put in,” Ketchum said.
Temperatures are expected to rise later this week and reach 90 degrees on Friday.

Ketchum said it’s unusual for temperatures to drop so far in June. The average high temperature in Elko for this time of year is 82 degrees Fahrenheit and the average low is 45 degrees. Snow levels will drop to around 6,000 feet, so high-rise homes along the Nevada-Idaho border could see some mixed precipitation Monday night before the cold front moves out of the region.
In addition to the cold temperatures, some areas of the Northwest were expecting snow, including Montana, where the forecast called for 12 inches of snow.
“Cold air intrusion and jet stream energy into the northwest U.S. will also bring a round of late wet snow to the high elevations of the northern Rocky Mountains over the next few days, where the storm warning winter weather warnings are in effect,” the National Weather Service said. “In addition, this energy system will also bring quite a bit of wind across the Great Basin and northern Rockies today, reaching the central Rockies and northern Plains Tuesday morning behind a strong cold front.”
Ketchum said the forecast for northern Nevada does not show any more sudden cold weather over the next seven to eight days.
