For many people, hiking is a vital family bonding activity, especially in New Hampshire. There is no shortage of hiking trails in the Granite State, with views ranging from picturesque to downright breathtaking.
But hiking trails are not the same for everyone. Some are not suitable for beginners, young children or older people and require you to advance. However, this shouldn’t stop you from hiking with the whole family; It just requires a little planning and research beforehand.
To help you find the right hike for you and your family, here are five kid-friendly hiking trails under three miles in the state of New Hampshire.
Trailhead Location: 2190 NH-123, Stoddard
At just over half a mile, this is a perfect hike with training wheels. Easy climb that should take about half an hour with a beautiful view from the top. And it’s a circular trail, so there’s no backtracking either! Summer hikers can also enjoy the blueberries and raspberries that grow naturally at the summit.
Trailhead Location: 2750 Profile Road, Franconia
This one and a half mile loop trail should take just under an hour to complete. The summit of Bald Mountain via the Artist Bluff Trail will provide a great view of Echo Lake. Any bird watcher in the family should also be sure to keep their eyes open. The trail is more than a little rocky, especially as you approach the summit, so shoes with strong traction are recommended.
Trailhead Location: Near I93/Route 3 in Franconia Notch State Park
Despite taking about an hour and a half to complete at 2.6 miles, this is the most family-friendly trail possible, as it is partially paved near the beginning for an easy start. The hike will take you past multiple waterfalls and deep pools, so bring a swimsuit. This ascends along Cascade Brook and eventually intersects with the Cascade Brook Trail, a segment of the Appalachian Trail.
Trailhead Location: Bretton Woods, Crawford Notch State Park
Okay, so it’s not less than three miles, but if you round down… The Mount Willard Trail is 3.2 miles and should take about three to four hours. While the road is bumpy, there are several stops along the way that feature ledges that offer a view of the surrounding Crawford Notch State Park. The summit is very open and sprawling, making it a perfect picnic spot with spectacular views of the notch stretching out in front of you.
Trailhead Location: Lafayette Place Campground, Franconia Notch State Park
Despite its depressing name, the three-mile Lonesome Lake Loop Trail is sure to lift your spirits with its view of the titular lake. The hike takes about two hours with some moderate inclines, but is clearly marked with yellow blazes, so there’s no worry about getting lost. Lonesome Lake Hut will also offer you a good meal to reward your efforts.
