Two suspects appear in court for the first time, one year after the Dove Drive murder
Two of the three suspects extradited to Boone County last week for their alleged involvement in the shooting death of Deshon Houston made their first court appearance Monday.
Deazes Turner, 22, and Alqueze Jones, 20, appeared in Boone County Court on Monday via video conferencing software. The third suspect, Deljuan Turner, 20, will make his first appearance at 1:30 pm Friday.
The trio faces charges of second-degree murder, armed criminal action and unlawful use of a weapon in connection with the June 2023 murder of Houston on Dove Drive in Columbia. Jones also faces a charge of failure to appear.
Central Missourians find ways to cool off during weekend heat advisory
Summer is officially here and it’s starting to feel that way in mid-Missouri.
A heat advisory has been issued for all of central Missouri through Tuesday.
As the heat rises, the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services urges Missourians to use community cooling centers.
“Heat and humidity can put a lot of stress on the body,” said department director Paula F. Nickelson. “Heat exhaustion can appear suddenly, without warning, and cause heat stroke that becomes a very dangerous situation.”
Jefferson City hopes to revitalize East Capitol Avenue with new project
Jefferson City on Monday issued three requests for proposals to redevelop sites across the city.

The largest of these projects aims to redevelop 20 parcels of real estate along East Capitol Avenue between Adams and Lafayette streets.
Housing Property Supervisor Dave Helmick will oversee the properties. While he believes some of the properties work very well as residential, he says the proximity to downtown and the capital would also make them excellent commercial sites.
Judges grant motion to block ‘SAVE’ student loan repayment plan
The Eastern District of Missouri has granted a preliminary injunction to block President Joe Biden’s “SAVE” student loan repayment plan.
Missouri Attorney General Andrew Bailey filed the lawsuit against the U.S. Department of Education over its Saving on a Valuable Education plan. The attorneys general of Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, North Dakota, Ohio and Oklahoma are also named as plaintiffs in the lawsuit.
Announced in 2022, the SAVE plan was intended to offer more generous terms than previous income-based payment plans.
Forecast: Extreme heat and overnight storms
Extreme heat has set in throughout the state. These nasty warm temperatures look to continue for another day before we try to see some relief in the form of rain in the afternoon hours Tuesday into Wednesday.
The extreme heat is here and it is here to stay for another day! Temperatures will climb into the low to mid 90s on Tuesday.
Heat index values are aiming to peak in the triple digits with some areas between 105 and 110 degrees.
