Rolesville High School senior Joslyn Hamilton has been named the top female track and field athlete in North Carolina.
Hamilton was selected as the North Carolina Gatorade Player of the Year in track and field on Tuesday morning.
Hamilton is a 5-foot-9 senior hurdler and sprinter from Rolesville. At the North Carolina High School Athletic Association 4A state championship this spring, he set two career highs and won three state titles, leading the Rams to the team state title.
In the 300-meter hurdles, Hamilton set a new state record with a time of 41.10 seconds, which ranked No. 6 in the United States. She also won the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.67 seconds and the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 13.57 seconds.
Hamilton also ran the first leg of the 4×100-meter relay team, which placed third at the state meet.
Nationally, Hamilton won the national championship in the 100-meter hurdles, recording her best time of 13.37 seconds, fifth in the country among high school girls.
“As a primarily hurdler, Joslyn Hamilton felt pretty comfortable leaving her comfort zone at the state meet (that’s what champions do) and her points in the 100-meter dash brought rewards to her team,” said Rich Gonzalez, editor of PrepCalTrack.com. “One of the nation’s top barrier competitors, her 30 individual points were key to the Rams team’s one-point victory over runner-up Cuthbertson for the state title.”
His performance this season earned Hamilton a spot on the HighSchoolOT state team.
When she’s not running track, Hamilton volunteered for the No Child Hungry Meal Packaging initiative, where she helps distribute meals to people in need. She has also helped organize Thanksgiving meals for families.
Hamilton has a 3.73 GPA and signed with South Carolina to compete in track and field next year.
