Arizona softball lost many infield contributors after last season. the graduation of Allie Skaggs, Carlie Scupinand Blaise Biringer along with the transfer of Olivia DiNardo It left the team without four of its regular contributors from the last two years. Enter the former Washington Husky Sidney Stewartwho announced his commitment to the Wildcats on Tuesday morning.
The sophomore was listed as the No. 6 transfer currently available. by Softball America. He can also help Arizona in several places. As Wildcats return to receiver Emily Schepp and add Emma KavanaghThey still have needs at the infield corners and designated player.
Stewart appeared in 45 of UW’s 47 games last season with 44 starts. During his two seasons in Seattle, he played in 91 games and started 82 times. He has a career batting average of .295, an on-base percentage of .441 and a slugging percentage of .470. He has 49 career strikeouts against 49 career walks. He has seven home runs and 28 RBIs in two seasons.
At the plate, Stewart’s numbers improved across the board from his freshman season. He hit .321 with a .461 on-base percentage and a .545 slugging percentage. He had 36 hits, including eight doubles, a triple and five home runs. He drove in 18 runs and scored 23. His walks increased from 22 in 2023 to 27 in 2024, while his strikeouts decreased from 27 in 2023 to 22 in 2024. He also stole seven bases.
His 2024 batting average ranks 62nd among the 378 players who entered the portal this offseason. His slugging percentage ranks 45th.
Behind the plate, he had a .988 fielding percentage this season. He made three mistakes. He had 19 stolen bases against him and caught three runners trying to steal. He allowed seven passes.
Stewart appeared in two of the three games Washington played in Tucson during the 2024 season. He went 4-for-4 with 4 RBIs, 2 doubles and a home run in an 11-3 win at UW on March 16. On March 17, he went 0-for-2. He did not appear in the series opener on March 15.
Stewart becomes Arizona’s second transfer this offseason. He joins former Iowa State pitcher Saya Swain, who signed on June 17.
Stewart is one of eight Washington players who entered the portal after the season ended. The team went 32-15, but had a late-season collapse, including a run-rule loss to Arizona in the Pac-12 Softball Tournament, and was eliminated in the regionals.
