A severe storm swept through Nyssa, Oregon, into Idaho on Wednesday, causing severe flooding, downed power lines and power outages.
BOISE, Idaho – Multiple strong and severe storms hit eastern Oregon and Idaho on Wednesday, causing damage in both states. In the wake of these storms, Canyon County officials declared a local disaster emergency.
According to Canyon County, around 6:30 p.m., it received information about the “local weather disaster” near Pearl Road and Highway 95 north of the Payette County line. The Canyon County Board of Commissioner Chari, under Idaho Code, considered the storm’s impact on the county a local disaster emergency.
“Declaring this an emergency allows additional resources to be used to serve the area that was affected by the severe weather. This opens an avenue to allow taxing and support districts in the area to obtain reimbursement for costs possibly unforeseen”. officials stated in a news release.
Several storms clustered closely together caused damage in both Canyon County and Nyssa. Parma was briefly listed under a severe storm warning, but that particular storm barely missed Parma as it headed directly toward Nyssa. In this severe storm warning, the National Weather Service said radar indicated wind gusts up to 60 mph and ping-pong ball-sized (1.5 inches) hail.
These particularly strong storms passed through Nyssa around 1:30 to 2:00 pm The Nyssa Police Department reported that around 3:00 pm, there were 12 power lines down, a business collapsed, flooding, and traffic was backed up. was deviating in many places. Nyssa resident Renee Goodenough said she has never seen a storm like this.
“It was nice and warm and I had the windows on my truck down, and the next thing that came was the storm: it started raining really hard, hail, and blew our greenhouse right up to the roof,” Goodenough said. “All the light went out.”
So far, about 1,000 residents of Nisa are still without electricity.
The Police Department said the area should be avoided as downed power lines could be in standing water on the roads. They also recommended staying home if possible.
The National Weather Service Boise Office says they will likely send an assessment team to Nyssa tomorrow morning to assess the damage. Once the official NWS report is done, we will have more information about what type of weather event caused the damage. The damage to Nyssa may have been caused by a microburst.
