The National Weather Service issued a weather alert Thursday at 1:23 a.m. for dense fog until 4 a.m. for Mercer, Venango, Forest, Lawrence, Butler, Clarion, Beaver, Allegheny, Armstrong, Washington and Greene counties.
“Dense, patchy fogs may form overnight, potentially causing rapid changes in visibility over short distances. At times, visibility may be reduced to a quarter mile or less. Please remain alert for reduced visibility and be aware Take special care if you travel at night. Remember to reduce your speed, increase the distance between you and the vehicle in front of you and use your dipped headlights,” the meteorological service indicates.
Weather Service Guidance for Navigation in Foggy Conditions
If you need to drive in fog, remember these safety guidelines:
Reduce speed:
- Slow down and allow additional travel time to reach your destination safely.
Visibility matters:
- Make sure your vehicle is visible to others by using low beams, which also activate your taillights. If you have fog lights, use them.
Avoid high beams:
- Refrain from using high beams as they create glare and make it difficult for you to see what is in front of you on the road.
Keep a safe distance:
- Maintain a considerable distance to account for sudden stops or changes in traffic patterns.
Stay in your lane:
- Use the lane markings on the road as a guide to stay in the correct lane.
Near zero visibility:
- In cases of near-zero visibility due to dense fog, turn on your emergency lights and locate a safe place, such as a nearby commercial parking area, to pull over and stop.
Limited parking options:
- If a designated parking area is not available, move your vehicle as far off the road as possible. Once stopped, turn off all lights except the emergency flashers, apply the emergency brake, and release the brake pedal to ensure the taillights remain off, minimizing the chance of other drivers colliding with your stationary vehicle.
By following these weather service recommendations, you will be able to navigate in foggy conditions more safely, reducing the risk of accidents and ensuring your well-being.
