A Vermont inmate, previously arrested after allegedly threatening to kill a Burlington police officer, faces new attempted escape charges. On June 17, Vermont State Police say Nicolelus Sanborn was escorted to Northwestern Medical Center for a medical issue. After the visit, Sanborn was in the transport van, where police say the door was “poorly secured.” According to state police, Sanborn opened the door and ran out, completely bound in handcuffs and shackles. Sanborn walked about 20 feet before he fell, and correctional officers caught him and returned him to the prison. Sanborn has been in custody since June 10 following an arrest by the Burlington Police Department. On June 9, Burlington police say they were responding to a domestic disturbance when Sanborn answered the door with a gun in his hand. Officers told him to drop it, but they say Sanborn tried to run away. When officers forced their way into the home, they say Sanborn escaped through a window, climbed onto the roof, grabbed a large stick and threatened them with it. Police say Sanborn also slammed a window on one of the officers and threatened to kill another officer. Sanborn has been held without bond as a result of that incident. He is due to appear in court on the attempted escape charge in August.
