Drowning Prevention Tips:
Drowning is the leading cause of death in children ages 1 to 4, along with birth defects, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Three children die every day from drowning. Here are some tips from the CDC on how to protect children around water:
Learn lifesaving skills.
Everyone should know the basics of swimming (floating, moving in water) and CPR.
Install a four-sided isolation fence, with self-closing and latching gates, around backyard pools. This can help keep children away from the area when they are not supposed to swim. Pool fences should completely separate the house and play area from the pool.
Life jackets are essential in open water.
Make sure children wear life jackets in and around natural bodies of water, such as lakes or the ocean, even if they can swim. Life jackets can also be used in and around pools for weaker swimmers.
When children are in or near water (including bathtubs), closely supervise them at all times. Because drowning occurs quickly and silently, adults who care for children in or near water should avoid activities that distract them, such as reading books, talking on the phone, or using alcohol and drugs.
