For many of us, school is out and summer weather has arrived. While it’s not summer yet, we know it’s getting close because summer celebrations are starting in the city. This is a time that many look forward to throughout the year and people often travel to their hometowns to celebrate these special days.
Volunteers who donate much of their time — many of them working and planning year-round — are preparing for city and county celebrations that will take place throughout the summer. In fact, before summer officially begins on June 20, many of our community’s celebrations and festivals will have already begun.
My own community of Pleasant Grove will be kicking off Strawberry Days on June 15th. This year’s theme is “Strawberry Days: The Heart of Pleasant Grove.” While this particular city celebration turns 103, a newer tradition to coincide with it is the giant illuminated strawberry on G Mountain. This year, there are planned to be two illuminated strawberries on the mountain, thanks to the Illuminate Foundation Hope.
“Our mission is to illuminate communities with vibrant light designs, promoting unity, compassion and supporting women and children in need. This year, our goal is to provide support to needy single mothers in the PG area. Go to our website (illuminatehopefoundation.org) to nominate someone in need. We also hope to get more lights to create the Strawberry Days logo with two berries together,” reads a recent Facebook post.
Of course, Pleasant Grove isn’t the only town holding a summer celebration. The Provo Freedom Festival has already begun and will continue for the next few weeks. Eagle Mountain’s Vineyard Days and Pony Express Days kicked off last week. The rest of the summer months are filled with celebrations in the city and we can look forward to the Utah County Fair, always a fun day, in August.

Parades, rodeos, family park parties, live entertainment, food, city stories and fireworks are just a few of the ways we can come together, connect with neighbors, meet new people, learn about the places we live and just have fun . Be sure to visit your community’s Facebook page or website to find out where and when the excitement will occur. Attending a neighboring community’s festivities is also a great way to pass the time. You can find something fun in all of them and many of the activities are free. Happy summer!
