Congressman Frank Pallone, who represents New Jersey’s 6th Congressional District, was challenged by John Hsu. Hsu, a climate change activist who was a leading supporter of Bernie Sanders in New Jersey in 2020, ran as a more liberal and progressive candidate than Pallone, who has long been part of the Democratic establishment.
Hsu was a leading critic of the controversial proposed natural gas power plant in Woodbridge, plans for which the energy company canceled last October. This is the second time he has challenged Pallone.
Whoever is elected in Tuesday’s Democratic primary will compete against the rival Republican candidate in November.
Pallone, 72, has represented New Jersey’s Sixth Congressional District for the past 34 years, since he was first elected to Congress in 1988. “NJ 6” stretches from Carteret and Woodbridge to Edison, New Brunswick and to Asbury Park. It hugs the Raritan Bay coastline, including cities like Aberdeen, Matawan, Hazlet, North Middletown, Sea Bright, and West Long Branch.
The polls closed at 9 p.m.
