Orlando is home to fun theme parks, resorts, and now the deadliest highway in America.
New data shows Florida has three of the 10 deadliest highways in the country.
Here’s what America’s deadliest roads are and how to drive defensively to avoid an accident.
What is the deadliest road in Florida?
Florida’s I-4 was ranked the deadliest highway in the state and country.
Data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration shows that I-4 has 34 fatal car accidents every 100 miles.
However, I-4 is not the only deadly highway in the state. US 1 in Florida, which extends north from the Georgia-Florida line to Key West, averages 108 deaths each year.
Some studies have classified US 1 as a deadly highway, placing it among the 100 most dangerous highways in the country.
Where is I-4?
I-4 connects I-275 in Tampa to I-95 in Daytona Beach through Orlando. It is 132 miles long.
Why does I-4 have so much traffic?
Much of I-4 passes through Orlando, where most of Florida’s theme parks are located.
Orlando welcomed more than 6.13 million visitors last year, about 25% more than in 2022. Along with millions of tourists, 2 million Floridians call Orlando home.
That’s a lot of drivers on I-4!

Why do fatal car accidents occur?
The risk of a fatal accident increases during the summer months as Americans drive longer distances for social events such as vacations and weddings.
Car accidents in Florida are most common at intersections and on major highways.
Speeding, reckless driving, distracted driving and poor weather conditions are some of the factors that influence fatal accidents.
In 2022, 13,524 people died in drunk driving accidents nationwide.
