Donald Trump criticizes the sentencing date agreed upon by his own lawyer
In the days following Donald Trump’s conviction in Manhattan, the Palm Beach Post said it received “an avalanche of letters” from its readers about his guilty verdict, including several Florida residents who criticized the former president.
In one of those letters, published by the Post, the local newspaper of Trump’s Palm Beach residence, a Palm Beach Gardens resident praised the “brave” prosecutors and jurors who held Trump accountable “for his countless misdeeds.” In another, a Delray Beach resident pointed to Trump’s conviction as a Republican issue, writing that the party “will show that they do, in fact, not care about law and order” if they “hang on” to the former president for the 2024 election. . choice.
Trump was found guilty of 34 felony counts of falsifying business records last week in connection with a hush payment made to adult film star Stormy Daniels during the 2016 election. But the former president and presumptive Republican presidential nominee in November He maintains that he is innocent and has accused prosecutors and the presiding judge of trying to interfere with his re-election chances by bringing the charges against him.
“Following the verdict in his criminal trial, Donald Trump publicly accused the state of New York of subjecting him to a rigged trial, orchestrated by the Biden Administration to take down a political adversary,” wrote Bill Morris, who lives in Palm Beach Gardens. to the mail. “In contrast, Trump is now a convicted felon. He is the actual person who has acted criminally to try to conceal information about his own behavior.”
“Prosecutors and the jury finally held Trump accountable,” Morris added. “Congratulations to the brave souls who have defended the rule of law and shown by example how to hold Trump accountable for his countless misdeeds.”
“Donald Trump is now a convicted felon,” wrote Alaric Lurie, a Delray Beach resident. “It will be very interesting to see if the law and order party abandons him as their candidate, or if they will hold on to him and show that, in fact, they do not care about law and order, and that they always only wanted to imprison the minorities”.
“One has to feel rich when Donald Trump’s defense attorney calls Michael Cohen the GLOAT, the biggest liar of all time, while representing a man who was caught lying more than 31,000 times while president,” John wrote to the Post. B. Kern, Juno Beach resident. . “Again, you can’t make this stuff up.”
In another letter published by the newspaper, Kirk Harris of North Palm Beach criticized Trump’s Republican allies who have rebuked the jury’s decision.
“How many times are we going to hear how sad May 30 was for America? I agree it was a very sad day, but not for most of the reasons you’ve heard,” Harris wrote. “The system worked.”
“What is so sad is the response from senior MAGA Republicans, including the Speaker of the House and the Minority Leader in the Senate,” they added. “Instead of supporting and defending our system and our constitution, they choose to try to take them down at the behest of their mob boss, now a convicted felon. Who is a threat to our democracy now?”
Newsweek emailed the Trump campaign Monday night for comment on the letters.
The Post also published a sample of letters from readers supporting the former president. In a note from Boca Raton resident Rich Klitzberg, the reader accused prosecutors in the Trump case of waging an “unprincipled, rapacious battle” to benefit Democrats in November.
“Never in our history has a more venal cabal of lawyers waged a more rapacious and unprincipled battle against a political adversary than the trial that ended with a guilty plea against Donald Trump,” Klitzberg said. “Democrats’ hatred of Trump stems from his defeat of their anointed candidate in 2016, Hillary Clinton, and his threat to undo his stranglehold on the Washington bureaucracy.”
“So to bring him down they fabricated criminal charges, assembled a team of Soviet-style prosecutors, and elected a judge who denied all fair challenges,” the reader added. “No one was surprised by the verdict, which will almost certainly be overturned on appeal.”
Jupiter resident Bill Gambin wrote a letter criticizing other stories published by the Post that have “smeared President Donald Trump as someone who doesn’t like our military and as a president who would sell out the United States to Russia or North Korea.” .
“What ridiculous accusations these suggest,” Gambin added. “Mr. Trump was already president, and none of these things were even remotely true. If you do not believe that Trump is fit to be our commander in chief, that is the right of any citizen. You do not have to justify yourself with dishonest and childish statements “exaggerations.”
Another reader suggested that the former president should receive a light sentence for his guilty verdict. Legal experts have told Newsweek that Trump is unlikely to be sentenced to prison when he is sentenced on July 11, given the logistics of keeping a major political candidate and former president behind bars with an entire secret service.
“A better punishment for his crimes would be to sentence Trump to five years of probation and 500 hours of community service,” wrote Riviera Beach resident Richard Gruber. “The sentence should require him to appear in person before his probation officer and complete his community service within the first year of his sentence.”
“Both probation and service must be completed in New York State. If you do not comply with the conditions of your sentence, you would be sent to prison to serve the remainder of your probation, and you would still be required to complete your service community before being eligible to leave the state,” Gruber added.
