State police say the driver of a vehicle that ran off the side of a Massachusetts highway and landed in a river has died from injuries sustained in the crash. The accident occurred shortly after 5 pm on southbound Route 3 in the Eel River area. State police said three people, including the driver and two passengers, were trapped inside the vehicle after the crash. Sky 5 video showed the vehicle in the water, covered by some fallen tree branches. State police said their preliminary investigation indicates a 2015 Nissan Rogue was heading south on Route 3 near the 10.6 mile marker. Police said the Nissan went off the left side of the road and landed on its roof in the Eel River. Plymouth Fire Chief Neil Foley said firefighters had to enter the river and use hydraulic tools to free the driver, a 50-year-old man. Police said the driver, who was from Plymouth, was flown to a Boston medical center, where he was pronounced dead. Two children inside the vehicle, a 13-year-old girl and an 11-year-old boy, suffered serious injuries in the crash and remain hospitalized, according to state police. Foley said the process to remove the driver from the vehicle took about 20 minutes. State police said it was unclear why the vehicle left the road. The left and right lanes were closed for almost three hours. Traffic was able to pass through the emergency lane, while analysis and cleaning were carried out. The cause of the crash was under investigation by Massachusetts State Police.
