The California DMV’s no-fail alternative to the driver’s license renewal test is now available in Spanish.
The e-learning course, which is taken from a home computer or mobile device, is a video course that is about 40 minutes long. The candidate watches seven lessons and answers several questions about each of them.
Multiple attempts are allowed for each question, and the DMV says you can’t fail e-learning: if you complete the course, the knowledge test requirement is met.
The English version was launched in 2022. A Chinese version is in the works, the Department of Motor Vehicles said; There is no estimated date for its availability.
The e-learning option may be selected by an applicant who has initiated the renewal process on the DMV website. Unlike the at-home online knowledge test, eLearning is unsupervised and available 24 hours a day.
Some drivers, including everyone over age 70, will still need to go to a DMV office to complete the final steps after completing the knowledge requirement at home, but many will be able to complete all renewal requirements online.
The third option to meet the knowledge requirement, in addition to e-learning or the at-home proctored exam, is to take the conventional exam on a computer at a DMV office.
For an applicant over 18, the conventional renewal test has 25 questions and you will need to get at least 20 of them right. You have three attempts; if you fail twice in your home configuration, you will have to go to a DMV office for the final attempt.
