New York (PIX11) – The family of a Queens man killed by two NYPD officers while suffering a mental health crisis met with the Attorney General’s Office on Tuesday.
Last month, the Prosecutor’s Office released chilling body camera footage of the incident as it continues to investigate the death of Win Rozario.
After leaving Tuesday’s meeting, the family remained silent and let advocates and attorneys speak on their behalf.
“Right now they are just saying that it is an ongoing investigation, but they did not tell us what direction it is going in or when it will conclude,” said Loyda Colón of the Justice Committee on behalf of the family.
During the meeting, the groups reviewed more police body camera footage of their loved one’s death, which has not yet been made public.
The Attorney General’s Office, as required by law, is investigating the actions of NYPD Officers Matthew Cianfrocco and Salvatore Alongi, who shot and killed Rozario.
The officers are on modified duty.
Mayor Adams said he will wait for the outcome of the attorney general’s investigation before taking further action, much to the family’s frustration.
“That has been really devastating for the family because they were left waiting,” Colón said. “Mayor Adams, who has the power to at least suspend these officers and fire them, has not done so.”
Win Rosario’s family demands answers from the City Council
The investigation has so far resulted in the release of much of the body camera footage from the afternoon of March 27. It shows when officers arrived at the Ozone Park home and Rozario’s brother, Utsho, told them that Win, 19, was having an episode.
When the officers attempt to greet him, Win reaches for a pair of scissors in a drawer and charges at the officers, who immediately shock him with a stun gun.
His mother and brother beg the officers not to shoot and the officers yell at them to move. Win takes the scissors again and the officers finally switch to their guns and fire the fatal shots.
The Rozario family said the NYPD could have de-escalated the tension at several points during the less than three-minute encounter. They presented documents expressing their intention to arrive in New York on Tuesday.
