GEORGIA – As rain moves across central Georgia on Monday, the showers could be a prelude to upcoming showers and thunderstorms across the state this week.
Monday’s rain was due to a front moving into the southern region, said Vaughn Smith, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service’s Peachtree City office.

In its hazardous weather forecast, the weather service said isolated or scattered storms were largely south of the Interstate 20 corridor. These storms could generate lightning and locally heavy rainfall, depending on the outlook.
Storms could return to central Georgia by Tuesday afternoon, with isolated storms possible Wednesday through Sunday, according to the outlook.
Smith told Patch that the showers and thunderstorms predicted for the next few days are normal weather for the Peach State during this time of year.
He added that the upcoming rainfall for north and central Georgia, which includes metro Atlanta and surrounding communities, this week is not expected to be severe.
As for temperatures, heat index values could rise as the week progresses, he said.
The weather service predicted Tuesday that the high temperature could be 98 degrees. The apparent temperature, or sensation of temperature, could also remain around 98 or 99 degrees, Smith said.
However, Wednesday’s apparent temperature may rise to around 100 degrees.
As of Monday morning, the weather service was not planning to issue a heat advisory for northern or central Georgia.
However, coastal Bryan, coastal Chatham, coastal Liberty and coastal McIntosh counties were placed under a heat advisory from noon to 6 p.m. Monday. Heat indices are expected to be between 106 and 110.
“High temperatures and high humidity can cause heat illnesses,” the forecast said.
The weather service offered the following tips for extreme heat:
- Drink much liquid.
- Stay in an air-conditioned room.
- Stay out of the sun.
- Check on family and neighbors.
- Take extra precautions when you are outside.
- Wear light, loose clothing.
- Try to limit strenuous activities to early morning or evening hours.
- Take action when you see symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.
- To reduce risk during outdoor work, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent breaks in shaded or air-conditioned environments.
- Anyone who is overwhelmed by the heat should be moved to a cool, shady location. Heat stroke is a
- emergency. Call 911.
