HONOLULU – Representatives from the Hawaii Tourism Authority, Hawaii Lodging and Tourism Association, the City and County of Honolulu, along with public safety professionals and visitor industry partners, gathered at a press conference at the Hawaii Convention Center last Wednesday to commemorate Honolulu’s recognition as the “World’s Safest City for Travel” in 2024 by Berkshire Hathaway Travel Protection.

Mufi Hannemann, chair of the HTA board of directors and president and CEO of the Hawaii Lodging and Tourism Association, praised the success of recent programs, the public safety workforce and the diverse professionals of Hawaii’s visitor industry for their “continued commitment to the safety and well-being of our people.”
He added, “There is nothing more important than ensuring our residents have safe communities to live, work and play, which in turn reinforces travelers’ connections to Hawaii as a safe destination to which they will return.”

“Our number one priority is public safety for all of us who live here, which therefore extends to those who visit us,” Mayor Rick Blangiardi said in the statement. “It also shows that the aloha spirit permeates our people, and travelers realize all this and more. Honolulu Police Department Chief Arthur “Joe” Logan said, “As an organization, we are working with our community partners, elected officials and businesses here to keep the city and county of Honolulu safe for everyone, from partnering on programs like Waikiki Safe and Sound or Weed and Seed in neighborhoods like Chinatown. “We can’t do it alone as we work every day to make Honolulu the safest place in the world.”
Honolulu City and County Attorney Steve Alm added: “This recognition is a testament to everyone here that Honolulu is as safe as it can be, as are all other communities on Oahu. From community organizations and neighborhood associations to each individual, it is about collaboration and working together.”
Waikiki Business Improvement District Board President Paul Kosasa spoke of the $4 million invested annually in Waikiki through safety initiatives, the Aloha Ambassador program, homeless outreach and street medicine, along with partnerships with law enforcement agencies.
“This year we are witnessing notable results in crime reduction and significant improvement in the ‘sight test,’ making Waikiki safer and more welcoming than ever. These efforts reflect the success of public-private partnerships and our continued commitment to ensuring a safe and vibrant environment for both our residents and visitors,” Kosasa said.
According to the release, Berkshire Hathaway Travel Protection’s State of Safer Travel Insurance Destinations report is the longest-running and most trusted research project tracking U.S. travelers’ attitudes toward safety and travel insurance. . The rankings were determined by analyzing survey responses collected in September and third-party data sources.
