CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The Justice Administration has called a press conference for next Thursday to discuss the results of its investigation into how the state handled the Kyneddi Miller case.
Miller, 14, of Morrisvale, died last month at his home. Investigators described her as “emaciated in a skeletal state.”
There is a disagreement between the state Department of Health Services and state police over the results of a 2023 visit to the home by a now-retired state trooper.
State police maintain that the trooper drove to the CPS office in Foster and made an in-person referral. Gov. Jim Justice has said those in the office don’t remember the police officer entering the building.
The Justice Administration announced on Friday afternoon that the press conference will take place next Thursday at 2 p.m. It will be held in person at the Capitol and will involve Governor Justice Chief of Staff Brian Abraham, West Virginia State Police Chief of Staff Maj. James Mitchell, Secretary of the West Virginia Department of Human Services , Dr. Cynthia Persily, and the Superintendent of Human Services for the State of West Virginia. Michele Blatt Schools.
MetroNews “Talkline” anchor Hoppy Kercheval first reported Friday that the investigation was coming to an end.
“Sources say the Attorney General is planning a press conference late next week, possibly Thursday, to reveal details of his investigation into how State Police and CPS handled the case of a 14-year-old county girl. of Boone who eventually died and was found in a skeletal state,” Kercheval tweeted on Friday. Presser is expected to reveal the results of interviews with state police and CPS employees. There have been conflicting stories about who spoke to whom and when after state police were called to the girl’s home. “The child’s mother and grandparents have been charged.”
Justice discussed the investigation during his press conference earlier this week following questions from MetroNews and other media outlets.
“We are having each of those agencies collect the information and then report it to our office. And we have very experienced attorneys here in our office, and a report will be released as soon as we gather the information,” Justice said in response to a question from MetroNews.
“I don’t know any better way to do it. We have several different agencies involved, so we need to gather the information first. Now, once we collect the information, if we have reason to believe that we didn’t get all the information or that there are people who are hiding things and all that, then we will go deeper. If we gather the information and everything appears to be in order, we will report what we have and move forward.”
Kyneddi Miller’s mother, Julie Miller, remains in jail on $250,000 bail. A judge on Thursday denied his request to reduce bail. The grandparents are currently out on bail. All three are charged with felony child neglect resulting in death.
