BLOOMINGTON – A stretch of stubbornly hot and humid weather across central Illinois began Sunday and is expected to continue into this week.
The National Weather Service in Lincoln said highs in the region this week would rise to the 90s, while lows would only fall to the 70s. Heat index values are expected to exceed 100 degrees on Monday and then reach a high of 90 degrees Tuesday through Thursday.
The forecast offers little hope of cooling off with some rain, as the chances of widespread precipitation are slim.

Dangers of extreme heat

A person suffering from heat stroke may experience headache, confusion, nausea, dizziness, and a body temperature above 103 F. The CDC recommends people call 911 immediately, use cold cloths or a cold bath, and Move to an air-conditioned space. Don’t give them anything to drink.
How to stay safe
- Stay indoors in an air-conditioned space as much as possible. If you don’t have air conditioning or the power goes out, look for cooling centers. Failing that, go to a mall or public library to cool off.
- Limit outdoor activities. If you can’t avoid them, try to take advantage of the cooler times of the day, such as the morning and evening hours.
- Drink plenty of water and take a cool shower or bath.
- Wear light, loose clothing and use the stove and oven less.
- Check with friends and family, especially those who don’t have air conditioning.
