Early in the morning of May 24, 2024, supporters of Georgia Southern University Department of Military and Veteran Services We were able to go out and enjoy a day of golf for a good cause.
Their second annual golf bout was not only a way to raise money for military students at Georgia Southern, but it also gave participants the opportunity to remember the soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country and honor them along with their families. .
To start the tournament, Colonel George Fredrick, Director of Military and Veteran Services, spoke about the nearly one million soldiers who have died for this country and asked the audience to stop by one of the south Georgia campuses and take a look at the flags, which imitate the Heroes Walk at Fort Stewart.
He then introduced Miss Izzy Brown (Isabella Rose Lotte Brown), graduate student at Georgia Southern. Brown is working toward a Master of Science in Criminal Justice and Criminology. She is the daughter of a soldier who made the ultimate sacrifice in Afghanistan. For her contributions and hard work, she received a $9,000 Robert S. Haywood Scholarship. This scholarship is available to students attending Georgia Southern who have or had parents who served in the military. Not only that, but Ronald A. Tosto, DDS & Associates also offered her free dental services that will cover her while she is in college.
Dozens of local leaders and donors enjoyed the tournament that followed this surprise scholarship award ceremony. Food and drinks were offered throughout the game and in the golf course lobby, but while the tournament was fun, nothing could compare to watching Brown and our other military heroes being honored that morning.
“We had a first-place team, a second-place team, the man with the longest drive, the woman with the longest drive, closest to the flag, and every participant got something.” said Colonel Fredrick but, “The cause was more important than individual or team praise.”
