It’s a busy Friday afternoon for April Leonard, owner of April’s Diner. The popular restaurant on Newton Square is even busier than usual. One reason is that it’s NASCAR race weekend at the Iowa Speedway in Newton. “We’re getting a lot of drivers here. There was one owner who came.” said April Leonard, owner of the Newton business. The staff here is ready for the additional business that will take place in the coming days. April welcomes the newcomers and is excited about the NASCAR race weekend ahead. “She’s generating quite a bit of business. It’s been positive. We’ve really enjoyed it,” Leonard said. KCCI spoke with Newton Mayor Evelyn George. “At the time the announcement was made, there is an estimated $100 million impact on central Iowa,” George said. George said this weekend’s economic boom at the track is not within Newton city limits. “It starts in Newton and then spreads, because I don’t think there’s a hotel room or a campground or an Airbnb room available for many.” , many miles from Grinnell and Marshalltown, Ames and, of course, the metro,” George said. April welcomes the newcomers and is excited about the NASCAR race weekend ahead.
“It’s generating quite a bit of business. It’s been positive. We’ve really enjoyed it,” Leonard said.
