LAFAYETTE, Louisiana (KLFY) – He University of Louisiana softball program has named a new head coach.
Ragin Cajuns alumna Alyson Habetz has been announced as the fifth head coach in program history, Vice President of Intercollegiate Athletics Dr. Bryan Maggard announced today.
Habetz replaces Gerry Glasco, who posted a 300-88 record in seven years leading the Louisiana program and ranks fifth among active Division I coaches in winning percentage (.773). Glasco resigned last week to take the head coaching job at Texas Tech..
“I am honored and extremely grateful for the opportunity Dr. Savoie and Dr. Maggard have given me to lead one of the nation’s premier softball programs at a place I call home, the University of Louisiana,” Habetz said in a press release. Tuesday. “This is where my softball journey began and my love for the Ragin Cajuns program, its fans and the community runs deep.
A native of Crowley, Habetz was a basketball and softball player for the Ragin Cajuns from 1990 to 1995. He scored 1,000 points in basketball and, as a member of the softball team, earned third-team All-America, All-South Region honors , All-Louisiana and Academic All-America. In 1993, Habetz and the Cajuns made it all the way to the Women’s College World Series.
Habetz last trained in the University of Alabamaserving for 25 years, most recently as associate head coach from 2008-23.
Before beginning her college softball coaching career, Habetz spent four years in women’s professional baseball following her days as a Ragin’ Cajun. She joined the pitching rotation of the Colorado Silver Bullets women’s professional baseball team in 1995 and completed her work in the organization for three years before joining the Long Beach Aces in the Women’s Professional Baseball League as a first baseman and pitcher
Habetz was inducted into the University of Louisiana Athletics Hall of Fame in 2003, the Louisiana High School Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2006 and the West Alabama Softball Hall of Fame in 2019.
