A man has been arrested and charged with murder after police say he shot and killed his wife in Peru on Tuesday night. Gaudreau made his initial court appearance via Zoom Wednesday afternoon at the Oxford County Courthouse, south of Paris. The Oxford County Sheriff’s Department received several 911 calls shortly after 7 p.m. Tuesday reporting a car accident on Auburn Road in Peru. Callers told police a truck pulled up next to a car and they shot at it. When officials arrived at the scene, they said they discovered a woman dead inside a blue Hyundai on the side of the road. The woman was later identified as 59-year-old Dale Gaudreau. The incident closed Route 108 for hours. The Oxford County Sheriff’s Department asked the Maine State Police Southern Major Crimes Unit to assist with the investigation. Hours after the incident, Gaudreau surrendered to Maine State Police and the Oxford County Sheriff’s Department. Investigators discovered that David Gaudreau, 60, called several members of his family and told them that he had shot his wife. During his court appearance Wednesday, he was not asked to enter a plea. Very little of Gaudreau could be seen in the Zoom broadcast, although he could be heard sobbing the entire time and holding his face in his hands. A judge says he will consider whether Gaudreau will need to undergo a psychiatric evaluation. He is being held without bail.
