Martin Midstream Partners LP (MMLP) said it is working to mitigate the environmental impact caused by a 2,000-barrel crude oil spill from its transfer pipeline connecting the Sandyland terminal to the Smackover refinery in Arkansas.
The company said in a news release that it is actively working with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the Arkansas Department of Energy and Environment and the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission to resolve the issue.
The EPA said the National Response Center had notified it about the oil spill on June 15 at 3 p.m. The oil spill was confirmed to have originated from a six-inch transfer pipeline owned by Martin Operating Partnership LP. Oil from the pipeline traveled approximately two miles through a natural drainage that leads to Holmes Creek, which connects to Smackover Creek. Smackover Creek merges with the Ouachita River approximately 7.7 miles from the source of the spill, the EPA said.
MMLP said it has prioritized rapid response and has deployed significant resources, equipment and personnel to accelerate oil recovery and cleanup efforts.
“In addition, specialized equipment is being used to remove oil from Holmes Creek and Smackover Creek to prevent the shine from moving downstream. As of June 23, 2024, cleanup efforts have recovered approximately 1,250 barrels of crude oil and efforts are ongoing under a Unified Command structure led by the EPA,” the company said.
The EPA said it continued to monitor response activities in Holmes and Smackover Creeks on June 24. He added that the party responsible for the spill reported the extraction of approximately 4,424 barrels of a mixed substance comprising oil and water from the streams. The separation process has yielded approximately 1,326 barrels of crude oil. Additionally, the operation has removed about 60 cubic yards of contaminated solid materials from streams, boosting progress in environmental restoration efforts, the EPA said.
