DES MOINES, Iowa—
Most of central Iowa was rain-free this afternoon, but some storms have been moving through the northwest part of the state.
Some of those cells could be strong tonight, but the best chance of storms for most of us will arrive later tonight. A wave coming from the Rocky Mountains has already generated severe storms on the Nebraska peninsula this afternoon.
These storms will continue eastward tonight and are more likely to develop ahead of this wave over South Dakota and Nebraska. It won’t be until after 12 a.m. that this batch of storms reaches Iowa. Strong wind gusts are possible in the western third of the state, then the storms should gradually weaken as they move toward central Iowa before dawn of Monday.
In addition to an isolated strong gust of wind, localized heavy rainfall is also likely. This could cause some flash flooding issues, especially in parts of western Iowa that got soaked last Friday and will see more rain tonight. In total, 1 to 3 inches of rain is possible in some areas.
Once these overnight storms clear, the rain potential will decrease throughout the day tomorrow.
Any repeat rain or storms on Monday will be fairly isolated.
On Tuesday, another wave crossing the northern plains will push a front into Iowa in the afternoon hours. Another line of storms is likely through Tuesday night, with a couple of strong storms possible.
Once that front passes, the jet stream settles into a northwestward pattern for several days. That means Iowa looks fairly dry the rest of this week and humidity levels should stay in check.
