BOSTON – The WBZ Weather Team is issuing an UPCOMING weather alert for the risk of showers and some severe thunderstorms in Massachusetts Wednesday night into early Thursday morning.

A warm, humid air mass is set to settle over New England on Wednesday, and will soon be removed by an approaching cold front. The result is likely to be a night of active weather.
Severe climate threat
The Storm Prediction Center has upgraded portions of our area from “marginal” risk for severe storms to “slight” risk (yellow area).

They also added a 2% tornado risk for extreme southwestern New England, primarily in Connecticut.

Tornadoes are not high on the list of concerns due to the impending cold front here in southern New England. The biggest risks are heavy downpours, localized flooding and damaging gusts of wind.

When will it start to rain?
Until 8 pm on Wednesday:
Mostly cumulus clouds forming with a slight chance of some isolated showers/thunderstorms.
8 pm Wednesday-4 am Thursday:
Most of our weather models indicate that this is the time of highest risk for downpours and some strong storms, especially between 10pm and 2am.

4am-8am Thursday:
A few showers are possible, mainly in far eastern Massachusetts, early Thursday.
Most of the wet weather should clear from the coast after 7-8am
weekend forecast
Once the storms pass, we’re in for a couple of bright, comfortable days.
Thursday afternoon and Friday look beautiful with low humidity and lots of sun.
We will see increasing clouds on Saturday and periods of wet weather Saturday night into Sunday.
