The historic Kalorama home of Esther Coopersmith, the esteemed DC socialite, is on the market for $18.5 million.
Coopersmith, who died in April, was known for her lavish gatherings that drew crowds made up of Washington‘s elite, including presidents, congressmen and diplomats.
The house at 2230 S St. NW was built in 1925 and originally had 28 rooms. Coopersmith purchased the property in 1995 and transformed it into the luxury experience it is today. The updated 13,000-square-foot home has six bedrooms, seven full bathrooms and three half-bathrooms.
The Coopersmith house became known for the extravagant parties it hosted: approximately 50 to 75 parties a year. Its dining room became especially famous with a dining table that could seat 75 guests.
Their events were frequently attended by presidents, first ladies, and diplomats from the United States and around the world, bridging political divides through their hospitality.
Among his distinguished guests, Coopersmith counted President Joe Biden as a friend since his first days in the Senate. He also had a close relationship with Queen Sirikit of Thailand, who frequently stayed at the mansion and had a favorite suite of hers upstairs.
The mansion sits on two lots, providing privacy and beautiful grounds that include a pool and ample green space.
The house is not just a residence but a part of DC’s social history. Memorabilia of past events, including signed photographs with personal notes of gratitude to Coopersmith, cover the walls.
“I think the likely candidate will be someone who wants to be in DC and continue the traditions of this house for the last 100 years,” said TTR Sotheby’s International Realty founder Jonathan Taylor.
