It is Tuesday, May 28, 2024, the last week of the month of May.
Cleanup continues today across central Alabama after yesterday’s severe storms downed trees and power lines, damaged some homes and vehicles, and knocked out power to more than 80,000 customers.
There are still about 1,700 customers without power in Bibb County as we approach the evening hours. Tuscaloosa County’s outages are down to 879. Pickens County still has 73 outages. Everyone is expected to be back online later today.
There was one death in Jefferson County when a tree crashed into an apartment. Fortunately, no injuries were reported in western Alabama.

This morning there was another 9-1-1 call about shots fired at a Tuscaloosa apartment complex. When TPD officers arrived at the Forrester Gardens apartment on James I. Harrison Parkway, they discovered that no one had been injured.
They discovered that the bullets had hit an unoccupied vehicle and apartment.

“Bloody Tuesday” in Tuscaloosa was overshadowed by “Bloody Sunday” in Selma, but it was an important event in itself in the fight for civil rights 60 years ago. The attack on protesters by police and angry citizens at the First African Baptist Church in the city center injured several men. Women and children. They were marching to desegregate the new county courthouse downtown.

Carbon Hill Police are searching for Chrstopher Austin Lee Dodd, 29, of the town of Nauvoo in Walker County. The alert only indicates that he is wanted in connection with a crime. Authorities warn that he is armed and dangerous.
Dodd is 6’1″ tall and weighs about 200 pounds. He has brown hair and brown eyes.

The Environmental Protection Agency has denied Alabama’s request to implement a coal ash permit program. The ruling states that Alabama’s permits do not meet federal standards.
If the EPA had approved Alabama’s process, the coal ash units would have been allowed to leach into groundwater, further contaminating it.
The decision affects Alabama Power’s three plants in the Black Warrior River basin.
It has been a year since the Alabama Cannabis Commission began licensing medical marijuana cultivation in the state. However, multiple lawsuits over the awarding process have halted licensing to distributors.
Commission Chairman John McMillian told news partner Keynote USA 3340 that the product is already being grown in the state with nowhere to sell it. He hopes the legal disputes will end soon and sales can begin in about four months.

It’s a short work week that will be dominated by conversations about what happened over the weekend. The Alabama softball team was given little chance of making it past the regionals, but they did. They then had little to no chance of winning the Knoxville Super Regional, but they did.
The Tide found enough offense to go along with stellar pitching and exceptional defense to eliminate No. 3 seed and archrival Tennessee and punch their ticket to Oklahoma City and the NCAA Softball World Series.
Congratulations to coach Patrick Murphey, his staff and most of all the players for their class, quality play and a bit of silliness as they prove almost everyone wrong.
Shout out to the Alabama baseball team for securing a spot in the NCAA Tallahassee Regional.
Both teams begin play Thursday with softball taking on powerhouse UCLA at 11:00 a.m. CDT in Oklahoma City. The Tide baseball team faces Central Florida at 5:00 pm in Tallahassee.
More than 180,000 fans attended the record-breaking six-day Southeastern Conference Baseball Championship Tournament.
Sunday’s title game won by Tennessee over LSU attracted more than 16,000 people.
The whole country seems to support the team without school. The Birmingham-Southern Panthers baseball team has earned a spot in the Division III College World Series in East Lake, Ohio.
They open play on Friday, the same day BSC ceases to exist after being closed for financial reasons. The first opponent in the double elimination tournament is Salve Regina.
