The University of Iowa‘s highest-paid employees include well-known head coaches and top doctors.
The school’s Transparency Office distinguishes the highest-paid teachers by base salary and total cash earned.
Base salary refers to figures derived from an individual’s base salary or fixed base remuneration. Total cash received encompasses all forms of cash compensation, including bonuses, commissions, overtime pay, or allowances.
Here is a list of the University of Iowa’s highest-paid employees by base salary as of February 1.
Kalpaj R. Parekh, MBBS
Kalpaj R. Parekh is a professor of cardiothoracic surgery at the University of Iowa and has a base salary of $933,832. Parekh’s current research focuses on chronic rejection in lung transplantation, specifically investigating the development of bronchiolitis obliterans in lung transplant patients. His laboratory focuses on understanding the role of epithelial stem cells in the progression of this disease.
Parekh holds several positions within the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery at the University of Iowa, including executive director and chair of the department, surgical director of the lung transplant program, and Nicholas P. Rossi Professor of Cardiothoracic Surgery.

Bryan Allen, MBA, MD, PhD
Bryan Allen, MBA, MD, PhD, is an associate professor and serves as chair and departmental chief executive officer (DEO) of Radiation Oncology at the University of Iowa. Allen’s base salary is $944,300.
Allen is an alumnus of the University of Iowa, where he earned a Ph.D. in biochemistry, a doctorate in medicine, and an MBA. He also completed his internal medicine internship and radiation oncology residency, both at the University of Iowa.
Allen holds several leadership positions at the university. He is the leader of experimental therapeutics at the Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center and the associate chair of translational research in the Department of Radiation Oncology.
Allen’s research interests focus on various aspects of oncology, particularly radiation therapy. Allen is also involved in the study of imaging techniques to evaluate the effectiveness of radiotherapy and pharmacological interventions in soft tissue sarcomas.

Matthew A. Howard MD
Matthew Howard, MD, is a leading figure in neurosurgery. He is a professor in the Department of Neurosurgery at the University of Iowa, chairman and chief executive officer of the Department (DEO), and holds the John C. VanGilder Chair in Neurosurgery. Howard’s annual base salary is $955,337.
Howard’s research interests primarily revolve around epilepsy and the neural basis of hearing. He has contributed significantly to understanding auditory processing and speech classification tasks within the human auditory cortex.
Seth Wallace, football
Seth Wallace is the assistant defensive coordinator and linebackers coach for the University of Iowa football team. He has a base salary of $1 million.
Wallace has been with the university since 2006 and served as a graduate assistant until 2008. He returned to the program in 2014 as recruiting coordinator and assistant defensive line coach. He has coached several defensive positions over the years, including linebackers, cornerbacks and nickelbacks.
During Wallace’s tenure, Iowa’s defense has been formidable and among the best units in the country. The Hawks have also enjoyed overall success, earning bowl invitations and high national rankings.
Lisa Bluder, women’s basketball
Lisa Bluder recently retired from her former position as head women’s basketball coach.
She led the Hawkeyes for 24 years and is the all-time winningest coach in program history, having surpassed Hall of Famer C. Vivian Stringer. Bluder’s annual base salary, which is on the books for fiscal 2023, is $1 million.
The Hawkeyes advanced to the NCAA Tournament 21 times during Bluder’s tenure.
Bluder is among the top five earners at the University of Iowa based on total cash received. Last year, Bluder earned $1,447,196, which includes bonuses, commissions, overtime pay or allowances.

Timothy Lester, football
Timothy Lester is the new offensive coordinator of the University of Iowa football team. His base salary is $1.1 million.
Lester was most recently with the Green Bay Packers as a defensive analyst during the 2023 season. Prior to that, he spent six seasons as head coach at Western Michigan and led the team to 37 wins and three bowl game appearances.

Bradley Haws
Bradley Haws was named CEO of University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in November. He also was named associate vice president of UI Health Care. Haws’ base salary is $1.1 million.
Haws has more than 30 years of healthcare leadership experience, including his previous roles as chief financial officer (CFO) and associate vice president of UI Health Care from 2018 to 2021.
As CEO of UI Hospitals & Clinics, Haws oversees the operational, strategic and financial performance of Iowa’s largest hospital and the state’s only tertiary and quaternary medical center. He also plays a crucial role in advancing UI Health Care’s mission of medical education and training, biomedical research, and patient care and service.

Denise Jamieson, MD, MPH
Denise Jamieson, MD, MPH, began her role as vice president for Medical Affairs at the University of Iowa in 2023. She is also dean of the Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine. Jamieson’s base salary is $1.3 million.
Jamieson previously worked at Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta, Georgia, where she was chair of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology and chief of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Emory Healthcare.
Phil Parker, football
Phil Parker is the defensive coordinator and secondary coach of the University of Iowa football team. His base salary is $1.9 million.
Parker is the third highest earner in terms of total cash received in 2023, having earned $1.76 million, which includes overtime, bonuses and allowances.
Parker is the longest-serving defensive coordinator in the country, having held the position for 13 years.
Under Parker’s leadership, Iowa’s defense has consistently ranked among the best in the country in several defensive categories, including scoring defense, passing efficiency defense and total defense.
Fran McCaffery, men’s basketball
Known for his dynamic playing style, Fran McCaffery is the University of Iowa’s highest-paid employee based on base salary.
The 13-year coach has a base salary of $1.95 million. Last year, McCaffery was the university’s second-highest earner based on total cash received. He earned $3.16 million in 2023.
McCaffery is the third-longest tenured head coach in the Big Ten and Iowa’s winningest coach.
His overall record as a collegiate head coach is 512-353 (.592).

Where is Kirk Ferentz?
Football coach Kirk Ferentz is not on the list of top 10 earners based on his base salary of $500,000. However, he earns the most based on total cash received.
In 2023, Ferentz earned $6.5 million. He receives $5.5 million in supplemental compensation, a $1 million longevity bonus and additional bonuses for various personal accomplishments during the season, making him the highest-paid employee at the University of Iowa.
