Breweries across the country love to experiment with new beer flavors. Sometimes they are a success, other times they are a total failure. That’s the game brewers have to play. And that’s the game this Wisconsin brewery is playing with its latest beer.
Beers can be mixed with many different things and the possibilities seem almost endless. But maybe where this brewery went is where the line should have been drawn.

Topsy Turvy Brewing in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin
In the beautiful town of Lake Geneva (which is less than an hour from Milwaukee), there is a brewery called The other way around where the motto is: ‘Flippin’ Good Beer’.
Looking at their drinks menu, it seems like they have a variety of delicious sounding beers. They have a blonde, a chocolate stout, a hard seltzer, a hefeweizen and many others.
But then they made a beer using a bug that’s been in the news a lot lately.
It’s strange enough that they made a beer with bugs, but the type of bug it is makes it worse.
Wisconsin Brewery Brews Cicada Beer
They have made a beer with cicadas. Yes, these things.
I’m usually pretty open to trying new beers, but this is a tough test for me.
Cicadas have been in the news due to two broods coming out at the same time this summer, making this very noisy in some parts of the country. Southeastern Wisconsin is a place where many cicadas have appeared. Apparently someone said, “Why don’t we turn them into beer?”
It’s called Magicicada Buzz and it’s a Nut Brown Ale made with cicada dust.
If you were hoping to try this beer, unfortunately, it appears they are no longer available. It is not currently listed on their website and the Milwaukee Journal Centennial writes that it was a limited-edition beer at least during the city’s Cicadapalooza festival a couple of weekends ago.
Part of me hopes they bring it back because it’s so weird, but another part of me says maybe it’s better if it’s limited edition.
Delicious beers await you at these 22 breweries an hour from Rochester
Craft breweries are incredibly popular right now and it doesn’t look like they’re going anywhere. Right here in southeast Minnesota, there are 22 breweries, all within an hour of Rochester, and more are being added!
