AUBURN, Maine—
The Auburn community took over a baseball field Sunday to honor the life of Elliott Hill, a teenager who committed suicide last week.
The Auburn Suburban baseball field was packed with friends, family and classmates, among the many who knew Hill.
Hill’s family says he was a varsity catcher for the Edward Little High School baseball team and loved music. Dave Jordan coached Hill on that baseball team and said Hill will always be in his heart.
“He won’t be with us physically, but he will be with us in spirit,” Jordan said. “I’m sure the boys will always think of him as we move forward.”
Hill’s father, Rodney Lester Hill Jr., spoke at the vigil with a message for those who may be in a dark place.
“If you can, tell someone who loves you. If you can, tell someone you love. And if you can’t tell any of those people, call or text 988, 988 and tell a complete stranger who is available and waiting for you to text them and call them,” said the father of Hill. “Please remember my words, some of which are based on Elliot’s words.”
After comments from Hill’s father, the candlelight vigil began during a downpour. However, it wasn’t long before a double rainbow emerged over the field.
Dozens of people spoke at today’s vigil, including unified sports participants, athletes, and technology center students, to name a few.
“Elliott, we will love you forever,” Hill’s father said. “And to all of you, I love you and thank you.”
