For about two months, a charred eyesore has marred the scenic beauty of Georgetown, Colorado. A trailer fire that broke out in mid-April due to overheated brakes left the burned wreckage on the side of the road, raising concerns among residents and prompting an investigation into the delay in removing the eastbound entrance ramp from I-70.
The trailer carrying barrels of citrus concentrate is now a shell, with few signs of having been removed.

Spencer Wilson, your KeynoteUSA Colorado mountain reporter, investigated the issue and uncovered a bureaucratic tangle involving multiple insurance companies; one insurance company for the truck, another for the trailer itself and a third for any potential environmental impacts, all contributing to the long wait according to the Colorado State Patrol and the Georgetown Police Department.
“It’s definitely unusual how long this has been here,” Georgetown quarterback John Gaskis admitted. He, like many residents, is frustrated by the unsightly presence of the debris.
“The problem here is that the insurance company wants to do their own investigation into the fire,” Gaskis explained. “They were once informed that if trying to move the trailer was going to damage it more…the insurance company said, ‘OK, we can’t do that, we have to look at it and inspect it first before it gets damaged again.’ “.
The situation has also raised security concerns. Local driver Ron Blazon said the trailer has already attracted curious people, sometimes children, sometimes adults, who could be injured exploring the burned shell.
“You see something like that and it’s still there. I don’t think it looks good for the state of Colorado to have these things on the side of the road like they do,” Blazon said, lamenting the impact on the state’s image.
Georgetown officials are hopeful for a quick resolution. They anticipate removing the trailer within a week and have acknowledged the unusual delay. The Colorado State Patrol also marked the trailer red to get the process moving again.
