Baseball is back in the Vermont state capital! The Vermont Mountaineers will host opening day Tuesday against the Sanford Mainers, with a familiar face on the home bench; Stowe High School student Ben Alekson. The rising sophomore from Fairfield University had a very successful first season in Division I baseball, pitching nearly 60 innings, racking up 50 strikeouts and helping lead the Stags to the MAAC championship game. In his first season with the Mountaineers in the NECBL, Alekson will attend his first games at Recreation Field. “I’ve never actually been to a Mountaineers game,” Alekson said. “I’m really excited to play my first game here with the team tomorrow, which I think is great.” Being a Vermont native, Alekson’s new teammates have leaned on him for advice about the area, which Mountaineers manager Mitch Holmes says is a unique experience for the team. “We’re thrilled to have Ben here,” Holmes said. “He had a really good summer for the Lake Monsters (2023), had a great first year at the school and will start the third game of the year for us. We have high expectations for him and hopefully he can show it.” “The Mountaineers are at home on Tuesday and Saturday, with first pitch for both games scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
