Conservatives are calling for a boycott of Kohl’s department store over its refusal to sponsor the Republican National Convention, which is being held in the state where the retailer is based.
Some posters have even pledged to “Bud Light the f*** off” Kohl’s in reference to the boycott that massively affected sales of the popular beer after its association with transgender Dylan Mulvaney.
The Republican convention will be held in Milwaukee July 15-18. Donald Trump is expected to be formally named the party’s nominee for president to take on President Joe Biden. However, the convention will take place just days after Trump is sentenced after being found guilty of 34 felonies in connection with money payments made to porn star Stormy Daniels.
Kohl’s is a popular retailer and shopping plaza anchor based outside of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. This week, company officials told the media that it will not sponsor any of the RNC events.
“As a Milwaukee-based company, we appreciate putting our hometown in the spotlight during this time to showcase all it has to offer, including our great neighborhoods, a variety of businesses, and all of our amazing residents, many of whom are Kohl’s associates. “a spokesperson told Newsweek.
“Kohl’s is not a political organization or donor and does not sponsor or participate in any specific RNC events. We financially support the business community through the Milwaukee Metropolitan Commerce Association (MMAC).
Kohl’s has announced that it will not sponsor any Republican National Convention events despite being based in the same state (EPA)
“This is the same approach we took in supporting the Milwaukee community when the Democratic National Committee was planned in Milwaukee.”
Some analysts have said companies are trying to avoid sponsoring the Republican or Democratic national conventions given the country’s tense political landscape, according to an KeynoteUSA report.
When Kohl’s made its intention known, it sparked online fury from several right-wing posters, with some saying they would no longer shop there.
“I’m happy to boycott Kohl’s. Too expensive and struggling anyway,” wrote X user John Boldebook.
“It’s time to cancel my Kohl’s account,” user Krisha Provinge wrote.
While R_Brown wrote: “I already informed my wife that Kohl’s was getting the sprout light treatment, there wasn’t much discussion once I told her what happened. Let’s see the value of the shares in the coming days.”
Kohl’s stock price rose 1.6 percent on Friday following the company’s announcement, and stood at $22.82 per share at the close.
Other social media users were quick to praise Kohl’s for its decision and didn’t care about those calling for a boycott.
“Looks like I’ll have to shop a little more often at Kohl’s,” Democratic poster JoJoFromJerz wrote on X.
“I will do all my Christmas shopping at Kohls and any other store that does not support a convicted felon running for president,” another prominent left-leaning poster wrote on the social media site.
