A salon in Idaho is drawing boos and applause for its blatant counterprogramming of Pride Month, declaring June “Straight Awesome Month” and billing it as a celebration of all things straight.
“Join us all month long in celebrating straight people, because without them, none of us would be here!” Old State Saloon in the city of Eagle wrote in a Facebook post announcing a month of festivities and drink specials.
Every Monday in June will be “Straight Guys Monday,” and a free draft beer will be given out to “any straight guy dressed like a straight guy,” the bar said.

The bar association even put out a call for a “professional” judge qualified “to determine whether men’s clothing choices are officially heterosexual,” offering $15 an hour plus free beer as compensation to anyone who “thinks they have what it takes to determine straight threads.”
Wednesdays will be for couples, where “every heterosexual couple” will receive a 15% discount on their bill.
Thursdays are ladies night (straight women, to be precise) and “Her Hetero Happy Hour” promises happy hour prices for straight women all day long.
The Facebook post attracted nearly 2,000 comments in 72 hours, with a well-balanced mix of people who applauded the subversive mock celebration and those who were offended.
“This is terribly disappointing. I can handle different political points of view. I CANNOT handle the intolerance and hatred towards marginalized communities,” wrote one Facebook user.
Another person chimed in: “Imagine being that insecure.”

But one follower commented: “This is absolutely fantastic!
“Thank you for standing up for the rest of the community who have been too afraid to do the right thing,” the person wrote.
Another commenter said: “I love that you have the guts to throw a straight guy Monday party.”
Some people used the comment thread to troll users who were more easily offended.
“Heterosexuals, maintaining the human species for 40,000 years. “You’re welcome!” said one person.
In a follow-up post addressing the uproar, Old State Saloon acknowledged that “a lot of people are upset” about Straight Awesome Month and tried to clear some things up.

“1) We love our LGBTQ+ sponsors! 2) We will not change our minds or give in to the group of those who respond with vitriol. 3) EVERYONE is welcome to celebrate heterosexuality with us in June! wrote the bar, which also hosts events like “conspiracy theory trivia” night with a rifle as a prize.
One commenter disputed this claim, responding: “If you ‘love’ your LGBTQ+ patrons, show it. May you have a night for them too.”
In response, the salon wrote: “We love our black clients too. We love our white customers. We love our sponsors who work for USPS. But we won’t do special nights for those people. We will also not do special nights for LGBTQ+.

“We choose to celebrate straight people. “We should be able to do it without so many people being so nasty to us, lying about us, canceling us, attacking our business, and/or trying to get us to do something about themselves,” he continued.
“If you want us to change who we celebrate, get over it. It’s not happening. Hooray for heterosexuals!
Pride Month is an annual celebration throughout the month of June intended to honor the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer communities.
It began in June 1970 with gay pride marches in New York, Los Angeles and Chicago to commemorate the first anniversary of the riots sparked by the NYPD raid on the Stonewall Inn, a gay club in Greenwich Village.
