In just one week, two children and a woman were trampled and kicked by moose in a Colorado resort town, attacks that wildlife officials called unprecedented behavior.
The incidents occurred in Estes Park, the gateway to Rocky Mountain National Park, the Colorado Department of Parks and Wildlife said.
• On May 30, an 8-year-old girl riding a bicycle was struck from 60 meters away by a bull moose, which then trampled her.
• On June 3, a 4-year-old boy was attacked by a moose at a playground.
• On June 7, a woman walking her dog on a leash was attacked by a moose about 20 yards away. The woman tried to run behind a tree to safety, but the moose knocked her to the ground and stomped and kicked her.
All three victims were treated for unspecified injuries and did not require hospitalization.
In all incidents, a moose calf was found in the area.
“Moose with young calves are known to be aggressive; however, we have never seen a year like this,” Jason Duetsch, wildlife area manager, said in a statement.
“All three attacks have been unfortunate and unprovoked accidents. “We have no clear evidence to suggest these attacks were by the same animal, which underlines how uncommon the moose behavior has been,” he said.
A mature male Rocky Mountain elk weighs about 500 pounds and measures 4½ feet at the top of the back.
CPW officials said they are urging Estes Park residents and visitors to be extremely cautious until elk calving season ends in early summer.
