“Reasonable Doubt,” a short film created in Wisconsin, screened last week at the Cannes Film Festival in France. The seven-minute film was written, filmed and produced in Janesville, Wisconsin, in December 2023. A team of about 30 Wisconsin creatives worked together to create the project from script to screen for the Cannes Yes We global film competition . The film is a legal drama. In the film, a woman and her son get into a car accident and kill the child. A group of college students in the other car will not confess who was driving or how the accident occurred. After competing locally and internationally, they won the opportunity to screen it at the Cannes Film Festival in France. “Make it one of the biggest film festivals in the world? It’s hard to understand that. It’s almost like your ultimate goal is to have your work screened for people all over the world,” said Derek Pfister, a cinematographer at Waukesha who worked on the project. The group hopes the project’s success will inspire more filmmakers to film in Wisconsin. “I think we’re taking steps to put short films or even feature films in the spotlight and not have to drive to Chicago or fly to Los Angeles to make their dreams come true,” said Alex Flees, the project’s local producer. They hope success will bring them back to Cannes in the future. “Reasonable Doubt” continues to compete at other film festivals in the United States. It is expected to be released to the public sometime this fall.
