Idaho Fish and Game said the man accidentally scared the moose with its twin calves. The moose attacked the hunter and knocked him to the ground.
BOISE, Idaho – A turkey hunter was left with bruises after being attacked by a mother moose on Friday, May 24, south of the Blackfoot city limits.
The Idaho Department of Fish and Game in a news release said the attack occurred after the hunter accidentally scared a mother moose with two calves. The moose charged at him and knocked him to the ground after the hunter reportedly fired two warning shots into the ground in front of the animal.
IDFG said the moose fled after being hit by the third shot. The hunter reported that he was “bruised” and that he would seek medical attention if his injuries worsened.
As for the animal, the hunter told Idaho Fish and Game that as he was leaving, he saw the mother elk lying down and then standing and grazing with her calves.
The condition of the moose is unknown.
IDFG urges hunters or outdoor enthusiasts to use caution when in forests or thick vegetation, as it may be more difficult to see animals.
Idaho Fish and Game provided the following list of tips if you see a moose:
- Keep a distance of at least three car lengths between you and the animal. Never approach a moose, especially a female with her calves.
- If you recreate with dogs, keep control of your pets on leashes and do not allow them to chase elk or other wildlife.
- A moose often bluffs by pawing the ground and licking its lips. If you lower your ears, you’ll probably be charged!
- If a moose attacks, run. Try to keep a tree or other object between you and the moose, or climb a tree if necessary.
- If you have bear spray, use it! Bear spray can be purchased online or at most sporting goods stores. It is important to keep it easily accessible on your body.
- If you are on the ground, curl up into a ball and do your best to protect your face and head. Try not to make noise. Moose charge because they perceive you as a threat.
- If you’re curled up on the floor quietly, you’ll probably seem less threatening.
