DES MOINES JOURNAL OFFICE
Here’s what Iowa politicians said Thursday, either in official statements or in social media posts, after a New York City jury convicted former President Donald Trump of 34 counts of falsifying business records and paid money to a porn actor to maintain his silence during his 2016 presidential campaign.
GOVERNMENT OF IOWA. KIM REYNOLDS, REPUBLICAN
“The United States saw this trial for what it was: a farce. For years, Democrats like Alvin Bragg have attempted to imprison President Trump with complete disregard for our democracy and the will of the American people. The only verdict that matters is the one that will be delivered at the polls in November, when the American people will once again elect President Trump.”
BRENNA BIRD, ATTORNEY GENERAL OF IOWA, REPUBLICAN
“Today is a dark day in American history. An example of why politics should have no place in prosecutions. The American people, not a court, should decide who will be the next leader of the free world. “The president (Trump) deserves better.”

US REPRESENTATIVE ASHLEY HINSON, REPUBLICAN
“This is a shame and a total farce. This has been a political persecution. from the beginning orchestrated by Biden. President Trump will fight this. and we must all fight alongside him to correct this mistake and re-elect him as president. The future of our country depends on it.”
JEFF KAUFMANN, CHAIRMAN OF THE IOWA GOP
Kaufmann said the trial was orchestrated by Democrats “terrified that President Trump would return to the White House.”
“The Democratic Party is lost as we know it, to the point of no return. This decision is an embarrassment to the rule of law. It is disgusting that they are mobilizing the federal government for political gain. With sentencing scheduled just before the Republican Convention in Milwaukee, corruption and malice are more prevalent here than ever. Shameful.”
US SEN JONI ERNST, REPUBLICAN
“It was never about justice. It was always about politics,” Ernst posted on his office’s official account. “Americans see Democrats’ weaponization of our justice system and this sham trial as a desperate attempt to go after Trump and block his re-election.”
On his personal X account, formerly Twitter: “These unprecedented politicized judicial tactics show Democrats are scared ahead of November. Iowans are SICK of Donald J. Trump’s political persecution.”
US SEN CHUCK GRASSLEY, REPUBLICAN
The jury’s unanimous verdict is “another example of how left-wing activist prosecutors use the judicial system as a weapon to carry out their political vendettas. “I hope the case is overturned on appeal.”
US REPRESENTATIVE RANDY FEENSTRA, REPUBLICAN
“Our justice system should not be used to attack political opponents. “The American people decide our elections.”
ROB SAND, IOWA AUDITOR, DEMOCRAT
“In seven years as Deputy Attorney General (of Iowa), I found that juries in both liberal and conservative counties took the job seriously and tried to do the right thing. “The jurors deserve our thanks and respect.”
The Iowa Democratic Party shared a statement from Michael Tyler of the Biden-Harris campaign, declaring the ruling as confirmation that “no one is above the law.”
“Donald Trump has always mistakenly believed that he would never face consequences for breaking the law for his personal gain. But today’s verdict does not change the fact that the American people face a simple reality. There is still only one way to keep Donald Trump out of the Oval Office: at the ballot box. Convicted or not, Trump will be the Republican candidate for president.”
The statement said Trump represents a threat to American democracy and is waging “an increasingly unhinged campaign of revenge and retribution.”
“A second Trump term means chaos, stripping Americans’ freedoms and fomenting political violence, and the American people will reject him this November.”
