Part of living in New York City is thinking about moving outside of New York City. Each month, we’ll round up the best listings within commuting distance, places where entire houses sell for the cost of a “junior room” (or less), but you’ll have to fix your own toilet.
We’re going to Connecticut!
$849,000: 2 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms

One property, two houses (and two porches). The farmhouse built in the 1930s still retains much of its original charm, with wooden beams and wide-plank floors, while the newer house, built in 2020, has a dreamy window bed and an open terrace. Split the price with a friend.
How do I get back to the city?
It’s a two-hour drive or you can take a bus from nearby Kingston.
So what do I do if I live there?
Hike in Minnewaska State Park and stop at Mountain Brauhaus for a beer on the way back.
$389,000: 2 bedrooms, 1 bathroom
This is basically all the listing photos have to offer for this two-bedroom cabin, but let’s assume you’re going to renovate it anyway. Photo: Courtesy of Colonia
The house is near Long Island Sound, as shown in this listing photo. Photo: Courtesy of Colonia
A tiny cabin on Long Island Sound is described simply as “Charming cottage in a beach community!” Most of the photos in the listing are from the beach, but what else do you really need? It has a roof and windows, and I think we can safely assume that everything will need to be renovated, but it is cheaper than other houses in the area.
How do I get back to the city?
Take the LIRR to Riverhead and then it’s just a ten-minute cab ride home.
So what do I do if I live there?
Go swimming. Renew your house.
$949,000: 4 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms
The house featured in this listing photo was built by Woodbury’s “first lawyer” and has been standing since 1760. Photo: Courtesy of Godson & Graham Real Estate

According to the listing, this house was built in 1760 by Woodbury’s “first lawyer,” so perhaps it will inspire you to similar levels of grandeur. You will have to replace some of the wallpaper, but it has been recently renovated, which means new plumbing and refinished hardwood floors. It’s a little pricey compared to similar-sized properties that have recently sold in the area, but those homes weren’t built by Woodbury’s first lawyer.
How do I get back to the city?
It is a trip of just over two hours.
So what do I do if I live there?
Have lunch at El Camion taco truck and then walk around what Reader’s Digest crowned the most charming town in the state.
$695,000: 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms
The cozy interiors of this home, as shown in this photo, include antique shutters and exposed wooden beams. Photo: Courtesy of Compass
It’s almost summer, so it’s worth considering a home with a pool, as shown in this listing photo, that you’ll never have to leave. Photo: Compass Connecticut
This house doesn’t look like much from the outside (maybe because it’s priced well for the area?), but the interiors are incredibly charming, with exposed beams, antique shutters, and vaulted ceilings in the rooms. Not to mention the huge backyard and pool.
How do I get back to the city?
It’s just under three hours by car.
So what do I do if I live there?
You will never have to leave your house again because you have a pool.
