Nyx Notes, Volume 1 Chapter 3: The Veterinarian
With a new pet rescued from outside, a quick checkup with a veterinarian is always a good idea. So, six days into her new home, we took Nyx to Skyview Veterinary Hospital in Billings Heights.
The nice ladies at SVH want a safe entrance for a kitty, so they asked us to call a few minutes before coming to make sure the lobby area is free of unruly dogs on leashes. They don’t want to terrorize a kitten. Cats must come in carriers.
Nyx knew something was up when we walked into an exam room. He crouched down to the other end of the conveyor from the door. With a little persuasion from Edan, he braved this new world.
Vet Tech Lindsey, a cat owner, just gushed about little Nyx. On a proper scale, she weighed one pound, 14 ounces. Lindsey asked about her bowel movements and if she had diarrhea. Edan gave a full description: “Turds in sauce.” (She may never eat canned beef stew again.)

Dr. Jill Paul was next and examined the ears for mites, felt the little body for anything unusual, and then used a stethoscope to look for any congestion in the lungs and heart.

The trick to resisting a cold stethoscope? A ready-made fur coat.
Dr. Paul determined Nyx’s age to be approximately six weeks. The only treatment she received was a topical medication to deworm and protect herself from fleas or ticks. There are no vaccines yet, they will arrive in a few weeks.
And of course, after being such a good kitty by not hissing or scratching, Nyx tried a little treat in a tube.

At the time of this publication, Nyx is in excellent health. He spent the rest of the day playing and I learned that jeans are the best protection against the claws of needles.
