Weather in Iowa: Heat persists, creating strong chances of storms
Updated: 10:30 pm CDT June 17, 2024
IN THE PAST 24 HOURS, WE ARE AWARE OF THE WEATHER TONIGHT DUE TO THE POTENTIAL FOR STORMS TOMORROW AND ALSO THIS EXTREME HEAT. YES, A BUFFET OF THINGS FOR YOU TO KEEP AN EYE ON THERE. AND YES, REALLY SEVERAL STORIES FROM THE WEATHER HERE THAT WE HAVE FOLLOWED SINCE THIS WEEKEND. WE HAVE THE HEAT AND HUMIDITY AND THEN AGAIN THE POTENTIAL FOR THOSE STRONGER STORMS. AS WE MENTIONED HERE TONIGHT, I THINK THE THREAT COMES LATER IN THE DAY. INITIALLY, TUESDAY IS GOING TO BE JUST A HOT AND SUMY START TO OUR DAY. IT’S QUIET AND DARK HERE RIGHT NOW. WE HAD SOME THUNDERSTORMS IN NORTHERN IOWA EARLIER THIS AFTERNOON THAT HAVE BEEN PUSHED TOWARD THE NORTH, AND I THINK WE’LL ALL BE OUT AS WE GO INTO THE EVENING HOURS TONIGHT. THE TEMPERATURES STILL THERE. WE ARE STILL HOT AND BATHY, RUNNING ANYWHERE FROM THE LOW TO MID 80’S IN DES MOINES, 81 TOWARD KNOXVILLE AND PELLA. UPPER 70’S FOR CARROLL AND AUDUBON, AND IT FEELS MORE LIKE THE MID AND UPPER 80’S FOR A LOT OF US HERE. WHILE WE ARRIVE AT 10:00 HOURS TONIGHT. SO TOMORROW IS A REPEAT OF TODAY, EXCEPT I THINK WE WILL SEE MORE EXTENSIVE STORMS DURING THE AFTERNOON AND EVENING HOURS TOMORROW. WE START WET. IT’S GOING TO BE A WINDY DAY. WE HAVE SOUTHERN WINDS TOMORROW WITH GUSTS TO 30 MPH. BREEZE ALL DAY, BUT IT IS HOT AND STEAMY IN THE AFTERNOON AND OUR STORM CHANCES INCREASE. SECOND PART OF THE DAY ON TUESDAY, SO WIND GUSTS TOMORROW AT 8 AM WE HAVE GUSTS TO 2530 35 MPH ACROSS WEST IOWA. WINDS REMAIN HIGH UNTIL TUESDAY AFTERNOON. THIS IS AT DINNER TIME. WE STILL HAVE THOSE PRETTY STRONG WIND GUSTS. SO TOMORROW IS FANIER COMPARED TO WHAT WE SAW TODAY. AND THEN WE WILL HAVE MORE POSSIBLE THUNDERSTORMS IN THE AFTERNOON AND NIGHT. REST OF TONIGHT. AGAIN, IT IS QUIET. SOME CLOUDS BUILDING TO BEGIN TOMORROW. WE MAYBE GET A QUICK SHOWER OR TWO AT LUNCH TIME, BUT IT’S IN THE AFTERNOON HOURS THAT YOU’LL START TO SEE THOSE STORMS DEVELOP INTO EASTERN NEBRASKA AND INTO NORTHWEST IOWA, AND THEN EVENTUALLY THEY FORM A LINE HERE AND THEY FREEZE, AND PUSH ACROSS DOWNTOWN IOWA AS WE KeynoteUSAPROACH TOWARD SEVEN, 8:00 TOMORROW AFTERNOON. THE BEST THREAT FOR THOSE STRONGER STORMS WILL BE NORTHWEST IOWA WITH HAIL AND DAMAGED WINDS. AND THEN THESE STORMS LOSE THEIR INTENSITY AT LEAST A LITTLE LITTLE BIT ONCE THE SUN GOES SET AND AS THEY COME CLOSER TO CENTRAL AND EASTERN IOWA, THEN IT BECOMES A LITTLE BIG WIDE RAIN. SOME STORMS BUILT IN THERE. AND THEN UNTIL WEDNESDAY, WE’LL GET SOME RAIN IN THE MORNING AND THEN I THINK WE’LL SEE MORE ISOLATED AND SCATTERED STORMS ON WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON AND NIGHT. BUT WE ARE EXPECTING DECENT RAIN HERE WITH TUESDAY’S STORMS. AND THEN AGAIN ON WEDNESDAY. RAINFALL TOTALS ABOVE AN INCH AND A HALF INCH IN SOME PLACES, SOME LOCALIZED AMOUNTS POSSIBLE, ALL FROM STORMS ARRIVING THROUGH TOMORROW AND WEDNESDAY. AGAIN, THAT SEVERE RISK LEVEL TWO OUT OF FIVE. FOCUSING MAINLY ON NORTHWEST IOWA. BUT HERE IN CENTRAL IOWA, WE’RE STILL AT THAT MARGINAL RISK OF SOME SEVERE WEATHER. AND AGAIN, WIND AND HAIL, I THINK WILL BE OUR BIGGEST CONCERNS WHEN WE GO IN TOMORROW AFTERNOON. TONIGHT IS GOING TO BE HOT AND WARM. LOW TO MID 70S. WE WILL BE BACK TO THE UPPER 80S F TONIGHT TO THE LOWER 90S F TOMORROW. SO SUNNY IN THE MORNING AGAIN. CLOUDS BUILD IN THE AFTERNOON. WITH THE POSSIBILITIES OF STORM. WE WILL SAVE IT. CONSCIOUS OF TIME. ON TUESDAY. WE ARE GOING BACK TO MOR
