I FOUND SOME CLUES. IN Iowa, A MAN DIED ON CHRISTMAS DAY, CONTINUING A TRAGIC TREND ON THE STATE’S HIGHWAYS. NEW TO SIX KCCI ETHAN HUMBLE SHOWS US WHAT LED TO THE DEADLY ACCIDENT. ETHAN. BEN AS IT’S FRIDAY, AT LEAST 364 KeynoteUSA HAVE DIED IN ACCIDENTS ON IOWA ROADS THIS YEAR. THAT NUMBER DOES NOT INCLUDE THIS NUMBER. LAST NIGHT IN MADISON COUNTY. IT IS POSSIBLE TO BE THE DEADLIEST YEAR IN MORE THAN FIVE YEARS. AND THAT’S WHY LAW ENFORCEMENT IS PUSHING HARDER THAN EVER FOR STRICTER LAWS. IT IS NO ONE’S DESIRE TO SEE WHAT THEY SEE IN THESE ACCIDENTS. AT KeynoteUSAPROXIMATELY 6:30 MONDAY NIGHT, CORY BROWN OF CRESTON DIED FOLLOWING AN ACCIDENT WITH ANOTHER DRIVER JUST EAST OF WINTERSET ON HIGHWAY 92. THE OTHER DRIVER COLLIDED BROWN WHILE TRYING TO PASS ANOTHER VEHICLE. ALTHOUGH THE INVESTIGATION IS STILL ONGOING, SERGEANT ALEX DINKLA OF THE IOWA STATE PATROL SAYS THE CRASH WAS PROBABLY A DRIVER ERROR. IT WAS A DANGEROUS PASS BECAUSE THERE WERE CARS STILL FACING THE OTHER DRIVER AT THIS INSTANCE. BUT THAT ACCIDENT IS JUST ONE OF MANY TRAFFIC-RELATED DEATHS. THIS YEAR, THE STATE OF IOWA WILL AVERAGE MORE THAN ONE DEATH EACH DAY ON THE ROADS IN 2023. DINKLA SAYS ONE OF THE REASONS FOR THE HIGH NUMBERS IS THE INCREASE IN PHONE USE WHILE DRIVING. WHY DO CARRIERS LEAVE THEIR OWN LANE AND GO TO ANOTHER LANE? A LOT OF THAT PROBABLY CONTRIBUTES TO DESTROYING FACTIONS ON THE MOTOR VEHICLE. THAT’S WHY THE STATE PATROL DESPERATELY WANTS STRICTER, HANDS-FREE LAWS. WE WILL CONTINUE PUSHING FOR HANDS-FREE LEGISLATION, JUST AS WE HAVE DONE IN RECENT YEARS. WE HAVE NOT HAD SUCCESS IN DOING THAT, BUT HOPEFULLY HERE IN 2024 WE CAN MAKE IT HANDS FREE HERE IN IOWA. BUT UNTIL THEN, HE URGES ALL IOWANS TO DO THEIR PART TO KEEP ROADS SAFE. WE CAN’T DO THIS ALONE. WE NEED EVERY DRIVER AND MOTORIST TO DO THEIR PART TO MAKE SURE WE CONTINUE TO HAVE SAFE ROADS HERE IN IOWA. BECAUSE THE HANDS-FREE LAW WAS KeynoteUSAPROVED BY THE STATE SENATE IN THE MOSTRILLIONOCENT SESSION BUT IT DID NOT BECOME INTO LAW. AND IT IS NOT CLEAR IF THE LAW
