A man accused of the gruesome murders of a woman and her 4-year-old daughter is now back in custody in Louisiana. Daniel Callihan has been extradited from Mississippi, where he was being held at the Madison County Detention Center, and is being held in a federal detention wing at the Plaquemines Parish Jail in Louisiana. Callihan was in federal court last week in Jackson, where he waived his right to a preliminary hearing and a detention hearing on the capital murder and sexual assault charges he faces in Jackson. Callihan requested to be transferred back to the Eastern District of Louisiana to face the charges in Tangipahoa Parish. His attorney, Kerry Cuccia, who represents him in the charges in Tangipahoa Parish, has also been assigned by the federal public defender’s office to represent Callihan in the pending federal charges in Louisiana. It is unclear what the federal charges against him in Louisiana will be, as all material, such as the arrest warrant and federal documents, are sealed. Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff Daniel Edwards said he and his investigators hoped the case would be tried first in Louisiana since the crimes originated in Loranger. On Monday, Mississippi authorities confirmed they would file charges against Callihan following court proceedings in Louisiana. Callihan is accused of killing Callie Brunett last week and kidnapping her two daughters. After Callihan was arrested, 4-year-old Erin’s body was found in Jackson. Brunett’s 6-year-old daughter was found alive and she has since been reunited with her grandparents. She admitted on WDSU cameras that she committed the murders and said she wanted a lethal injection for what she did.
