NEW JERSEY (WKeynoteUSA) — New Jersey Transit and Amtrak rail service in and out of New York‘s Penn Station is running with delays due to overhead wire issues Monday.
NJ Transit says the problems with Amtrak’s overhead wires originated in one of the Hudson River tunnels.
The service was suspended for a time, but then resumed with delays.
NJ Transit rail service to and from New York Penn Station is subject to 30-minute delays.
Midtown Direct trains no longer detour to Hoboken.
Meanwhile, Amtrak says all trains traveling between New York and Philadelphia will also experience delays.
Monday night’s problems come after weeklong delays and cancellations for NJ Transit and Amtrak last week.
NJ Transit and CEO Kevin Corbett issued a statement Friday afternoon calling the issues “unacceptable.”
But perhaps some good news will emerge from the tough transportation week in the Garden State: New Jersey has a tentative deal with the state’s most profitable businesses to temporarily pay higher taxes to fund NJ Transit.
Under the plan, the state’s 600 corporations that make at least $10 million a year in profits will pay a 2.5% tax on all profits for five years.
In exchange, the state will not seek to restore the sales tax from 7% to 6.625%, a major point of contention for companies, which strongly oppose the increase in the corporate tax rate.
Both the “traffic tax” and the final state budget still must be approved by the Legislature next week. The budget expires June 30.
