Cabrillo standout senior pitcher and infielder Spencer Gallimore has signed with the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs.
Gallimore made his selection official when he signed a National Letter of Intent Monday at a signing ceremony in Cabrillo to play for the NCAA Division 2 Mountain Lions.
“I’ll have the opportunity to pitch and hit for them, which I think is a unique opportunity they’ll give me,” Gallimore said.
“I’ll play second base for them. Pitching is the main thing they wanted me for.”
Gallimore was the 2023 Times All-Area Baseball Team Utility Player of the Year for a Cabrillo team that reached the CIF Central Section Division 2 title game and qualified for the Southern Regional Playoffs of Cal.
For two years, Cabrillo rode the pitching of Gallimore and fellow Cabrillo senior Gage Mattis for much of the team’s success. This year, Mattis was 12-0 with a 0.63 ERA and Gallimore was 9-0 with a 0.71 ERA.
The top-ranked Conquistadores suffered a painful 3-2 loss in eight innings to No. 1 Atascadero in the Division 2 playoffs this year. Gallimore finished with a .341 batting average. His 20 RBIs ranked second on the team.
Cabrillo finished 24-4. The Conquistadors earned a three-peat in the Ocean League championship last season. Upon promotion to the Mountain League, the Conq won the league title outright at 14-1.
Gallimore said, “I talked to Westmont and a few other small schools as well, but I would say Colorado Colorado Springs was always the clear number one choice for me. I visited there last summer for the first time and it’s very nice to be there.” .
“I toured the campus, saw the baseball team play a series, met the coaches and everything else.”
Galilmore said he received some academic money that will be spread over his four years at Colorado Colorado Springs for a partial scholarship.
“It depends on my performance if I get more for the athletic part,” for the scholarship, the Cabrillo senior said.
Gallimore said, “I’m pretty confident I can earn a roster spot early on,” in Colorado Colorado Springs.
“Right now I plan to major in business, with an emphasis in sports management,” in Colorado Springs, Gallimore said.
