WELL, 506 RIGHT NOW, SUMMER CAMPS STARTING IN BIRMINGHAM. SEVERAL HAVE ALREADY STARTED THEIR SHOWS AND WVTM 13 S PATSY DOUGLAS IS LIVE LOCALLY FOR US THIS MORNING. PATSY, WHAT ARE YOU DOING TO KEEP THE KIDS BUSY AND ACTIVE THIS SUMMER? Well, listen, it’s been hard trying to keep them active. MANY OF THOSE CHILDREN ARE STILL RECOVERING FROM THE IMPACTS OF COVID 19, AND MANY OF THEM ARE DEALING WITH SOCIAL SKILLS. BUT OUR LOCAL CAMPS ARE LOOKING TO CHANGE THAT. A RECENT STUDY SHOWS THAT 60% OF CHILDREN AGES 2 TO 12 SHOWED A DECREASE IN SOCIAL SKILLS DURING THE PANDEMIC, SUMMER CAMP DIRECTORS TELL US THIS IS STILL A MAJOR PROBLEM. MANY CHILDREN STILL HAVE STRUGGLE STARTING A CONVERSATION. THERE’S STILL THIS DELAY THAT CHILDREN HAVE IN REGARDS TO NOT HAVING THAT PERSONAL POWER DYNAMIC, YOU KNOW, SPEAKING FLUELY WITH THEIR FRIENDS. THEY ARE SO USED TO PLAYING GAMES, WHETHER IT’S MINECRAFT OR FORTNITE OR JUST YOUTUBE VIDEOS OR REELS, THAT SOMETIMES CHILDREN ARE STILL BEHIND IN THEIR SOCIAL INTERACTION SKILLS. THERE ARE NOW SOME CAMPS THAT STILL ACCEPT CHILDREN DURING THIS TIME. THE AVERAGE COST FOR MOST OF THOSE SUMMER CAMPS VARY FROM 100 TO $300 A WEEK. OF COURSE, WE’LL HAVE THE COMPLETE LIST FOR YOU IN OUR FREE WVTM 13 NEWS KeynoteUSAP
